The History of Contabo
Contabo GmbH was established in the spring of 2003 in Munich, the capital city of Bavaria, southern Germany. Giga-International – as it was know at that time – has steadily grown from just a single server in a data center to more than 450,000 servers today. Let's take a closer look at how this happened.
In 2009, we established a new state-of-art data center in Munich with space for more than 4,000 physical servers. Our offices were also located on site in order to ensure quick reaction time from our support team 365 days a year (including holidays and weekends).
At the beginning of 2013, we changed our company name from the aforementioned "Giga-International" to "Contabo". At that point, we also started to go beyond the traditional German market and offer our hosting services internationally.
In order to meet the increasing demand for our VPS and Dedicated Servers, we launched our second data center in Nuremberg in 2014. This new data center is capable of hosting 10.000 physical servers on the 1.700 m² data center floor. Together with the new data center, a new office was opened on site to maintain quick reaction times.
In 2020, we opened our first data center outside Europe. With locations in Central, East, and West USA, we've offered premium connectivity for all customers in the United States. Locations on other continents soon followed.
Today, after more than 20 years since the beginning, we have grown from 2 people to a team of roughly 300 people offering servers in 11 Locations across 9 Regions on 4 continents. We are still following the same founding principles of maintaining German quality of both the server infrastructure and support team while offering incredible prices.

Senior Executive with three decades of experience in the TMT sector, including roles at Premiere, AOL, Telekom, Arvato, HEG, Cancom AG, and group.one. For over 17 years, he has held senior leadership positions as CEO, COO, and SVP, with a strong focus on high-growth, subscription-based business models in the infrastructure and software space. In his spare time, he enjoys sports, particularly golf, and spending time with family and friends.
Finance leader with 15+ years of experience as CFO and in senior executive finance roles within the telco and software industries. Began his career in PwC's Technology Team, developing deep expertise in managing financial operations for tech-driven businesses. Former athlete, passionate sports enthusiast, values quality time with his family.
With over two decades of experience as an entrepreneur and CEO in the digital sector, Dominik combines strategic expertise with a strong technical understanding. His focus is on the development of digital products, innovative business models, and data-driven growth. In his personal life, he is passionate about technological DIY projects, enthusiastically develops home automation systems, enjoys e-foiling on the waters of Berlin, and loves spending quality time with his family.
Lisa is an experienced executive with over 10 years track record in building and managing HR organizations in PE-backed cloud and hosting companies. She studied General and HR Management. Besides work, Lisa is a passionate equestrian.
Software engineer turned executive with 20 years of experience in software development, mainly in the cloud industry. PhD in software architecture. In his spare time, Rémy works on DIY projects.
Severin has over 20 years of experience in IT, most of which he spent in leadership roles in the hosting and cloud industry, responsible for IT operations and development. In his free time, he enjoys gardening or exploring the world through travel.
4 Reasons Behind Contabo's Low Prices
Right Hardware
At Contabo, we always carefully check not only the relationship between the purchase price and performance offered (CPU Performance per EUR), but we also look at the energy efficiency (CPU Performance per Watt) and durability of each hardware component. This way, we can be sure that purchased hardware will be long-lasting and inexpensive to operate, which translates directly into our ability to offer low prices.
Scale & Standardization
Our prices are low because of the effects of scale. Of course, companies like AWS are bigger than us, but unlike most of our competitors, we have a fully unified hardware platform in all of our Data Centers around the world. Thanks to that, we not only get better discounts on purchase prices (which we then can pass on to our customers), but we also save money and time on maintenance.
Optimization
We use proprietary optimization scripts to manage load on our servers. This way, we are able to offer stable performance for all our customers at a great price point. Also, our logistics and warehouse management are optimized to reduce waste and thus give us space to offer even better prices.
Lean Culture
Germans are known for looking at every euro twice before spending it. And we are no different. We don't invest in premium office locations or expensive company cars. Even our CEO shares the room with 3 other people. Thanks to this lean approach, even with our low prices, we are profitable.

Our Approach to Security
Physical Security
The first pillar of our approach is maintaining strict access rules, to make sure that no one unauthorized has access to our Data Centers. This includes constant CCTV monitoring and access control based on magnetic cards.
Following the Process
We believe that sticking to our processes at all times gives the highest guarantee of maintaining high security for our Customers. We can't talk about the details of our security precautions but, as one of Contabo co-founders put it: "We are obsessed with security".
Involving Customers
Our approach to security would not be complete without getting our Customers involved. That is why, we are insisting on using 2 Factor Authentication and we require you to authorize every person contacting us from a new email regarding your customer account.
