As you may notice, we will do so in Windows Server 2012, but the procedure is basically the same with Windows Server 2008.<\/p>\n<p>At first, we need to open a menu by right-clicking the <strong>Start<\/strong> button:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2015-05-28_18-14-12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3077\" src=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2015-05-28_18-14-12.png\" alt=\"_2015-05-28_18-14-12\" width=\"265\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2015-05-28_18-14-12.png 265w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2015-05-28_18-14-12-192x300.png 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We must select <strong>Disk Management<\/strong> to open the Disk Management service. If Windows identifies a new hard drive, a pop-up menu opens:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/mbrgpt.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3078\" src=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/mbrgpt.png\" alt=\"mbrgpt\" width=\"414\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/mbrgpt.png 414w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/mbrgpt-300x230.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For volumes smaller than 2 TB, we choose <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master_boot_record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">MBR<\/a><\/strong>, for larger disks, we select <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GUID_Partition_Table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">GPT<\/a><\/strong>. As the hard drive in our example only has a capacity of 100 GB, we&#8217;ll go with\u00a0<strong>MBR<\/strong> here. By clicking <strong>OK<\/strong>, the chosen <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Partition_table\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">partition table<\/a> will be written to the hard disk. After that procedure, we will be sent to the main menu of the Disk Management service. Alternatively, one can reach this overview via <strong>Control Panel<\/strong> =&gt; <strong>Computer Management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3079\" src=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt.png\" alt=\"haupt\" width=\"814\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt.png 814w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt-768x552.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we can see here, our new hard drive is listed as <strong>Disk 1<\/strong>. But before we can use it for storing data, we need to partition and format it. Therefore, we right-click the rectangle next to the box which says Disk 1 and choose <strong>New Simple Volume<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3080\" src=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt2.png\" alt=\"haupt2\" width=\"812\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt2.png 812w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt2-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/haupt2-768x551.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 812px) 100vw, 812px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A wizard opens. It is quite self-explanatory and you can&#8217;t do anything wrong by using the pre-selected and suggested values. Per default, the wizard uses the whole disk capacity for the new partition and formats it with the file system <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NTFS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">NTFS<\/a><\/strong>, which is recommended for Windows. Of course, you are free to change those settings, but in our example, we go along with them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ntfs.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3081\" src=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ntfs.png\" alt=\"ntfs\" width=\"494\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ntfs.png 494w, https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/ntfs-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The name of our new partition is <strong>STORAGE<\/strong>, but of course you can name it as you wish.<\/p>\n<p>Once you went through the wizard, the new hard drive will be ready to use.
