{"id":1956,"date":"2013-05-13T14:52:23","date_gmt":"2013-05-13T12:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/?p=1956"},"modified":"2020-10-12T11:36:36","modified_gmt":"2020-10-12T09:36:36","slug":"from-squeeze-to-wheeze-like-a-breeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/contabo.com\/blog\/from-squeeze-to-wheeze-like-a-breeze\/","title":{"rendered":"From Squeeze to Wheezy like a breeze!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Upgrading Debian 6.0 to 7.0<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the release of Debian 7.0 there are two ways that you can have this distribution installed on your VPS or Dedicated servers.<\/p>\n<p>One is the clean installation, this could be done using our customer control panel. This is a complete re-installation, so you will loose all your data. This method is recommended as it will freshly install a clean distribution.<\/p>\n<p>But if your system is not that critical, or if you have somehow a &#8216;clean&#8217; system, which means that you have installed software only using package management tools, you have not manually &#8216;tweaked&#8217; anything or if you have not installed any additional software using .tar, then you can proceed with the following instructions to upgrade from Debian 6.0 (Squeeze) to Debian 7.0 (Wheeze).<\/p>\n<p>Before we begin a word of caution :&nbsp; Though we have tested this on a test server here at our Contabo labs, and everything seem to work without any problem, we highly recommend you to create a backup and store it remotely before you begin, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>Complete official instruction to upgrade can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.debian.org\/releases\/wheezy\/amd64\/release-notes\/ch-upgrading.en.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Bringing your current Debian 6 up-to-date:<\/h3>\n<p>Before beginning it is a good idea to ensure your current release is up to date. You can do it using the following commands:<\/p>\n<h4>Update and Upgrade<\/h4>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get update<\/span><\/strong>\n\n<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get upgrade<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Changing sources.list<\/h4>\n<p>Please open your favorite text editor to open \/etc\/apt\/sources.list file<\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">vi \/etc\/apt\/sources.list<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>and change <em>squeeze<\/em> to <em>wheezy<\/em>, after the change my <b>\/etc\/apt\/sources.list<\/b> file looks like this :<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb http:\/\/ftp.de.debian.org\/debian wheezy main non-free contrib<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb-src http:\/\/ftp.de.debian.org\/debian wheezy main non-free contrib<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb http:\/\/security.debian.org\/ wheezy\/updates main contrib non-free<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb-src http:\/\/security.debian.org\/ wheezy\/updates main contrib non-free<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb http:\/\/ftp.de.debian.org\/debian wheezy-updates main contrib non-free<\/span>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">deb-src http:\/\/ftp.de.debian.org\/debian wheezy-updates main contrib non-free<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Upgrade the System<\/h4>\n<p>We follow the upgrade process in the following sequence according to the official how-to.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Update the sources <\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get update<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Minimal upgrade <\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get upgrade<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p><strong><i>Upgrade the kernel<\/i><\/strong><br \/>\nYou can check the current installed version of your kernel using the following command :<\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">dpkg -l | grep linux-image<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>my output was:<\/p>\n<pre><code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">ii  linux-image-2.6-amd64                2.6.32+29                      Linux 2.6 for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)<\/span><\/code>\n<code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">ii  linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64           2.6.32-45                      Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Upgrading kernel :<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<pre><code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get install linux-image-2.6-amd64<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p>next step would be to update grub to be sure that everything works as expected:<\/p>\n<pre><code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">update-grub<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p><code><i>update udev<\/i><\/code><\/p>\n<pre><code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get install udev<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><code><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\">Final upgrade:<\/span><\/code><\/h4>\n<p>After all the above steps have been completed, we can upgrade the distribution:<\/p>\n<pre><code><span style=\"color: #008000;\">apt-get dist-upgrade\n\n<\/span><\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Here you go \u2013 have fun with your new Debian 7.0 &#8211; you can check your version:<\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">cat \/etc\/issue<\/span><\/strong>\n\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Debian GNU\/Linux 7.0 \\n \\l<\/span><\/pre>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Upgrading Debian 6.0 to 7.0 &nbsp; With the release of Debian 7.0 there are two ways that you can have this distribution installed on your VPS or Dedicated servers.
